Masks

« Of beings as well as things, we never possess anything but appearances and reflections. Isn’t everything just masks and mirrors? “Henri de Régnier

The mask is an enigmatic object imbued with the "disturbing strangeness" of a fake face and the play on appearances. An object of metamorphosis intended to conceal the face for cosmogonic, religious or theatrical purposes in ancient societies, the mask underwent a considerable renewal and success in Europe, particularly in France, at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century in sculpture and decorative arts. This dialogue of the arts with the mask is revealed here under a precious aspect and without any other pretense than that of capturing a look seduced by an accessory that has become a jewel.
